Choose which screening package is best suited for you.
Heart screening involves a series of tests for early detection of cardiac issues. It identifies individuals who present with evidence of heart disease or conditions that exacerbate the risk of heart disease in the future. Periodic heart screening alerts your heart doctor to the warning signs earlier and can lead to more favourable outcomes.
In general anyone above the age of 18, and especially those above 35, should go for regular heart screenings even if they feel they are perfectly healthy. Some symptoms of heart disease may not be readily apparent and might only show up during a thorough examination.
Certain risk factors increase the chances of developing heart disease. They include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, history of smoking, diabetes, and kidney disease. A family history of heart disease or stroke can also put you at increased risk. If you have any of these risk factors, you might want to consider going for a heart screening test to get a professional opinion.
Additionally, if you find that you are experiencing symptoms of potential heart disease like breathlessness, chest discomfort, or dizziness, then you should also make an appointment with a heart doctor in Singapore as soon as possible.
Generally speaking, the risk of heart disease increases as you get older and both males and females above the age of 35 are more prone to cardiovascular events. If you are between 18 and 35, then it is recommended to go for a heart screening if you have risk factors or if you are experiencing symptoms of heart disease.
The basic heart screening package covers all the crucial elements of a heart assessment and includes detailed blood and urine analysis with a 12-Lead Electrocardiogram and a treadmill stress test. This is suitable for anyone going for a heart screening for the first time and does not have any risk factors or symptoms.
A more comprehensive test that includes a 2D Echocardiogram is suitable for NS pre-enlistees or for sports participation pre-screening.
For those above 40 or have at least one cardiovascular risk factor, we generally recommend the advanced screening package as the risks of heart disease increase with age.
If you’re above 50, at risk for heart disease, or if you have a family history of heart disease, then we recommend the complete heart package that includes a CT coronary angiogram that will give us a clear picture of any present issues in your cardiac system.
At your initial consultation, Dr Tay will go through your medical history and discuss which of the screening packages is most appropriate for your condition and health concern.

Detailed advanced risk assessment for people above 40 years old and/or has atleast one cardiovascular risk factor
Complete heart assessment for people above 50 years old or has at least one cardiovascular risk factor or a family history of heart issues.
Early detection and intervention can prevent complications like cardiovascular disease, heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease. Even if you feel completely fine, it’s still useful to go for a heart screening assessment to understand your risks of heart disease and potentially identify any risk factors you could be carrying. Frequently, patients with risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes do not experience any symptoms and the first sign of any problem is a heart attack or a stroke.
A heart screening test will begin with an assessment of your physical health. A detailed medical history of you and your family will be evaluated by your heart doctor. Your blood pressure reading, height, weight, and BMI will also be recorded.
It will then be followed by detailed cardiac investigations such as a 12-Lead Electrocardiogram, 2D echocardiogram, exercise stress test, or CT coronary angiogram. A full blood and urine panel will also be conducted to check your blood count, kidney and liver health, along with your cardiac risk profile. Finally, a post-screening evaluation will be conducted with our cardiologist where there will be a thorough review of your medical results.
Tests will differ depending on the heart screening package chosen.
This depends on your heart condition. If you do not have any risk factors for heart disease then it is recommended that you make an appointment for heart screening every 2-3 years.
A typical heart screening can be completed from start to finish in a matter of hours. Most tests like an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram can be performed in a few minutes. Other tests like the treadmill stress test can take up to 20 minutes. Advanced tests like the CT coronary angiograms may take a few hours.
Your cardiologist will advise you on the procedures and measures to adopt before a heart test. Follow them as closely as possible and avoid caffeine or smoking for up to four hours before an exam. Blood tests generally require you to be fasting for about 8 hours for greater accuracy. Plain water is allowed.
Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes which will make it easier to change out into a hospital gown which might be necessary for certain procedures.
To lower the risk of suffering from heart disease you can adopt lifestyle changes that can strengthen your heart muscle and reduce the strain you put on your cardiovascular system.
Exercising regularly, eating heart-healthy foods, losing excess weight, lowering your stress levels, and quitting smoking are some of the recommended ways to make your heart stronger and less prone to heart disease.
